The Summer Road Trip: A Great American Tradition

Is your vehicle ready for the miles ahead?

The first official day of summer might be June 21, but let’s be honest—road trip season kicks off the moment school’s out and the skies turn blue. Whether you’re cruising up the coast, heading for the mountains, or just making a break for that closest Buc-ee’s, now’s the time to prep your car for the journey.

Before you load up the family (Aunt Edna included) and hit the highway, give your vehicle a little TLC with these summer-ready tips from your friends at Hollingsworth Auto.

1. Check Your Tire Pressure

Hot pavement and long drives are hard on tires. Use a tire gauge to check pressure when the tires are cold — early morning is best. Look for the recommended PSI on the driver-side door jamb or in your owner’s manual. Properly inflated tires will also last longer, improve gas mileage and also provide a safer driving experience — especially in severe weather.

2. Test the A/C System

In Savannah, a working A/C isn’t optional — it’s survival. If your air conditioning has been sluggish, noisy, or smelling a little funky, it might be time for a recharge or inspection. A clean, cool cabin makes for a much more enjoyable trip.

3. Inspect Wiper Blades & Fluid

Afternoon thunderstorms are a Southern summer staple. Make sure your wiper blades are up to the task — no streaks, no skipping. Top off your windshield washer fluid with a bug-fighting formula to help keep that glass crystal clear.

4. Pop the Hood and Take a Look

Even if you’re not a gearhead, a quick under-the-hood check can help avoid trouble on the road. Here’s what to look for:

  • Battery: Check for corrosion. A little baking soda and a toothbrush can clean the terminals, but recurring buildup may signal a deeper issue.
  • Oil: Make sure levels are good and the oil isn’t overdue for a change.
  • Coolant: Ensure it’s clear (not cloudy) and topped off. Use pre-diluted coolant for convenience.
  • Brake, Power Steering, and Transmission Fluids: Each should be clean, at the proper level, and the right color (clear, amber, or bright red depending on the fluid). If anything looks dark or dirty, it’s time for service.

When in doubt, take it to your dealer to keep your trip trouble-free.

5. Give It a Good Wash and Wax

Not only does a clean car look better in your vacation photos, but waxing helps protect your paint from the summer sun. You can take the shortcut and take your car to the car wash to get a detail, or follow our recommendations on how to do it yourself.
